KAMPALA, May 2 (Xinhua) -- Landslides have ravaged six villages in the western Ugandan district of Kasese, the Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS) said here on Tuesday.

The relief agency said in a statement that following torrential rains in the mountainous district, 26 houses were completely destroyed with 200 households still at risk, adding that water, sanitation, hygiene, as well as bridging gaps in shelter and protection are the most urgent needs.

According to the statement, the district disaster management committee is working with the URCS to address the gaps and help the families develop coping mechanisms.

The update came a day after a four-year-old was killed and two others injured by mudslides in the same district on Monday.
