DAR ES SALAAM, April 14 (Xinhua) -- A Tanzanian government official told parliament Friday that the budget for free education for primary and secondary schools will be increased in the 2023/2024 financial year.

The Minister of State in the President's Office responsible for Regional Administration and Local Government, Angellah Kairuki, said the government will increase the budget for free education to 399.64 billion Tanzanian shillings (about 170 million U.S. dollars) in the 2023/2024 financial year from 346.46 billion shillings that were approved in the 2022/2023 financial year.

The increase will be 15.34 percent, Kairuki told the House in the national capital of Dodoma when she tabled her ministry's budget estimates for the 2023/2024 financial year that begins on July 1, 2023, and ends on June 30, 2024.

She said 157.79 billion shillings will be allocated for primary schools and 241.85 billion shillings for secondary schools.

The implementation of the free education policy will go in tandem with the improvements of schools' environment to facilitate smooth teaching and learning.
