KIGALI, April 12 (Xinhua) -- The agencies of the United Nations (UN) in Rwanda on Wednesday commemorated the 64 UN employees who were killed during the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi, in line with the ongoing mourning week.

The event held at the UN office in Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, was attended by the families of former employees killed during the genocide, government officials, diplomats, and representatives of UN agencies in the country.

"One way to truly honor the victims of the genocide against the Tutsi and reflect on the suffering and resilience of those who survived is our commitment in totality that this is a past that should never happen again," Ozonnia Ojielo, the UN resident coordinator in Rwanda, said at the event.

"Let us not forget their faces and their contributions to society, and pledge to build a world guided by human rights and dignity for all," he said, noting that looking back at the history of the genocide against the Tutsi, it is important to sustain the gains that Rwanda has achieved in areas of unity, reconciliation, and social cohesion.

After the national mourning week which will end on Thursday, commemoration activities will continue until July 4 to mark the 100-day calamity, during which over one million people, mainly Tutsi and moderate Hutus, were killed.
