DAR ES SALAAM, April 11 (Xinhua) -- A Tanzanian government official told parliament on Tuesday plans were afoot to install open internet WiFi in public areas to encourage the use of information and communication technologies (ICT).

Deputy Minister for Information, Communication and Information Technology Mathew Kundo said the government was investing in digital information to enable it to support economic development.

Kundo said the government recognized the need for providing open internet WiFi to enable the public to engage in socio-economic issues that will help boost development and trade.

"To start with, the government has installed open internet hotspots in five centers to promote the use of the technology for various social and economic undertakings," he told the House.

Kundo mentioned the five centers as the University of Dodoma's College of Informatics and Virtual Education, the Lungemba College of Social Welfare, Buhongwa in Mwanza region, Tabora market, and Kiembesamaki in Zanzibar.
