LAGOS, April 10 (Xinhua) -- The Nigerian police killed one gunman and rescued two kidnapped people in an operation in the northeastern state of Adamawa on Sunday, the police said Monday.

The two victims were kidnapped and taken away by unidentified gunmen from a village in the Toungo area of the state, said Suleiman Nguroje, the police spokesperson in the state, in a statement, adding that one kidnapper was neutralized when he and his gang arrived at a spot to receive ransom demands from relatives of the kidnapped victims.

"The suspected kidnappers sighted our men in the area and engaged them in a gun duel to escape arrest. One of them was neutralized while others escaped with bullet wounds," said Nguroje, noting that efforts have been intensified to get other fleeing members of the gang arrested for prosecution.

There have been a series of gunmen attacks in Nigeria in recent months, leading to deaths and kidnappings.
