ADDIS ABABA, March 23 (Xinhua) -- The Ethiopian government on Thursday announced the appointment of Getachew Reda, a senior Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) official, as head of the interim Tigray regional government.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has appointed Reda as chief administrator of the Tigray Region Interim Administration, the Ethiopian PM Office disclosed in a statement.

According to the statement, the chief administrator is entrusted with the responsibility to establish an inclusive administration, as well as lead and coordinate the executive body that can ensure the representation of all political actors operating in the Tigray region.

The appointment came a day after the House of Peoples' Representatives (HoPR) of Ethiopia, the lower house of the country's parliament, removed the TPLF from its terrorism blacklist.

Ethiopian Minister of Justice Gedion Timothewos told members of the parliament Wednesday that the TPLF has been taking "positive measures" that have served as a ground for the revocation of its designation.

He said the TPLF has been recently contributing to the national efforts for peace.

According to the motion presented to the HoPR, the move is in support of the positive efforts that are underway to bring lasting peace to Ethiopia.

The peace efforts came against the backdrop of a two-year brutal conflict that left tens of thousands dead and millions more in need of urgent humanitarian assistance.

On Nov. 2, 2022, the Ethiopian government and the TPLF signed a cessation of hostilities agreement to end the conflict. The two parties in the Ethiopian conflict have formally agreed to the cessation of hostilities and orderly disarmament. The deal includes restoring law and order and restoring services and unhindered access to humanitarian supplies.
