GABORONE, March 23 (Xinhua) -- Botswana's Ministry of Health issued a warning about an increase in the number of people visiting health facilities with influenza-like illnesses, but noted that the majority of cases tested negative for COVID-19, said a statement released on Wednesday.

"The ministry is currently investigating the possible cause of these influenza-like illnesses," said Christoper Nyanga, spokesperson for the Ministry of Health. The public was warned to take precautions, avoid crowded areas, and wear masks when in the presence of people showing influenza-like symptoms.

In addition, the public was urged to practice proper hygiene, wash their hands frequently with clean water, and cover their mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing. Although the number of people seen at health facilities across the country has increased in recent days, no hospitalizations or deaths have been reported, said Nyanga.

Currently, the Ministry of Health is on high alert and closely monitoring the situation.
