TUNIS, March 17 (Xinhua) -- Tunisian Interior Minister Taoufik Charfeddine announced Friday evening his resignation for family reasons, private radio station Mosaique FM reported.

Charfeddine announced his decision on the sidelines of a ceremony at the National Guard school in Bir Bouregba in the northwestern province of Nabeul.

Speaking to reporters, Charfeddine said that he decided to devote more time to his children after the death of his wife last year.

Meanwhile, he thanked the Tunisian President Kais Saied who, according to Charfeddine, understood his situation.

It is the first resignation from Prime Minister Najla Bouden's cabinet, which has witnessed a reshuffle in recent months, including the dismissal of five ministers.

On May 16, 2022, an explosion rocked the house of Charfeddine, causing the death of his wife a few weeks later.

Investigations indicated that the explosion was caused by a natural gas leak.
