TUNIS, March 18 (Xinhua) -- Tunisian President Kais Saied appointed Kamel Feki as the new interior minister hours after his predecessor announced resignation on Friday, said a presidency statement released late Friday night.

"Saied appointed Feki, who currently holds the post of governor of Tunis to head the interior ministry," the presidency said without giving further details.

Graduated in law, Feki is considered one of the most prominent supporters of Saied, and was appointed as governor of Tunis on Sept. 30, 2021.

His predecessor Taoufik Charfeddine announced Friday evening his resignation for family reasons, citing that he decided to devote more time to his children after the death of his wife last year.

It is the first resignation from Prime Minister Najla Bouden's cabinet, which has witnessed a reshuffle in recent months, including the dismissal of five ministers.
