WINDHOEK, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) -- Namibian President Hage Geingob on Wednesday conveyed messages of condolences to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, following deadly earthquakes in the two countries.
Geingob extended condolences to the two governments, the bereaved families and the entire Turkish and Syrian people, relaying heartfelt condolences, support and solidarity during the wake of this tragedy.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with Türkiye and Syria and hope that amongst the pain and devastation, the brave men and women leading the national rescue effort will be able to find survivors and bring them to safety and refuge," he said.
Türkiye's disaster management agency updated Wednesday the death toll from the earthquakes to 7,108, with around 40,000 injured.
In Syria, at least 1,250 were killed and 2,050 injured, the Syrian Health Ministry said. Media reports also cited rescue workers as saying that at least 1,220 were killed and over 2,600 injured in the rebel-held region in Syria.
A powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck Türkiye's southern province of Kahramanmaras at 4:17 a.m. local time (0117 GMT) on Monday, followed by a magnitude 6.4 quake a few minutes later in the country's southern province of Gaziantep and a magnitude 7.6 earthquake at 1:24 p.m. local time (1024 GMT) in Kahramanmaras. ■
