LAGOS, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- Twelve hostages were set free after the Nigerian troops recently stormed a forest used as a hideout of gunmen in southern Nigeria's Edo state, the police said on Sunday.

Mohammed Dankwara, police chief in Edo state, said in a statement that the rescued victims were among the scores of people who were kidnapped by a group of gunmen from the Igueben train station of the state about a week ago.

"The joint security forces stormed a forest named Igboha and rescued the 12 victims unhurt," Dankwara said, adding that the 12 rescued bring the total number of victims rescued to 18, as six were rescued on Monday by the police.
