DAR ES SALAAM, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- Tanzania's power utility authorities on Wednesday night officially announced power rationing across the country caused by the prolonged drought that has led to decreased water levels in hydropower dams.

The Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited (TANESCO) said in a statement that the power utility company was generating less electricity against the hydropower dams and other power generation sources installed capacities.

The statement, signed by TANESCO Managing Director Maharage Chande, said power generation from various sources had dropped by between 300 MW to 350 MW a day, adding that out of the total deficit, hydropower generation accounted for 181 MW a day.

The TANESCO was implementing short, medium and long-term plans aimed at easing power shortage in the country as the current daily rationing stands at 8 to 12-hour periods, the statement said.

The statement mentioned the plans as strengthening power generation and distribution, and the construction of the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project.
