ALGIERS, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on Thursday reiterated Algeria's "permanent solidarity" with Cuba in the latter's struggle to lift the sanctions imposed on it for over six decades.

Tebboune made the remarks to the press after his meeting with visiting Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel in Algiers, during which they discussed bilateral cooperation as well as regional and international issues.

"The two nations share historical relations of friendship and solidarity that are marked by the values of freedom, peace and justice," the Algerian president said.

He reiterated Algeria's "permanent solidarity with the Cuban people," who are striving to lift the economic, financial and commercial blockade imposed on their country for more than 60 years, "based on our belief in the principles and purposes of the United Nations and the resolution of the General Assembly's resolution calling for lifting the embargo on Cuba."

Tebboune said that Algeria has decided "to ease the burden on the Cuban economy through canceling all interest rates on Cuba's debts to Algeria and adjourning their payment."

Algeria also "will grant a solar-power plant and resume the hydrocarbon supply to Cuba so as to enable it to restart the stopped power plants," he added.

For his part, President Diaz-Canel said "Algeria and Cuba constitute a model to follow in terms of their bilateral ties of friendship, solidarity and mutual support since 1963, when Cuba sent a medical team to provide help to the brotherly Algerian people."

He said that his visit, which coincides with the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, is of "great significance."
