JOHANNESBURG, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- The South African government on Thursday welcomed the signing of the peace agreement between the government of Ethiopia and the country's regional forces Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF).
"This agreement signals a commitment to ending the use of force to settle differences and disputes, and confirms the correctness of South Africa's principled position that political differences are best resolved through meaningful dialogue and diplomacy," said South Africa's Department of International Relations and Cooperation in a statement.
On Wednesday, the Ethiopian government and the TPLF agreed to permanently silence the guns and end the two years of conflict in northern Ethiopia after days of peace talks in Pretoria, South Africa.
South Africa pledged to work with all parties to ensure that peace is maintained in Ethiopia, according to the statement, which added that there are no winners in wars as they do not solve problems.
"The real heroes are those who work towards building peace and sustaining it. We, therefore, call on the leaders of both sides to continue to work towards maintaining this peace through implementing the agreement in full," the statement said. ■
