TRIPOLI, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- The Libyan authorities on Sunday announced the recovery of 42 unidentified bodies from two mass graves in the city of Sirte.

A total of 42 unidentified bodies were recovered in two mass graves inside the Ibn Khaldoun School in the Giza marine area in Sirte, some 450 km east of the capital Tripoli, and they were transferred to Ibn Sina Hospital in the city, the General Authority for Research and Identification of Missing Persons said in a statement.

"Samples taken from the bodies were transferred to the authority's laboratories, in coordination with the forensic medicine department," the statement added.

Last month, the authority announced recovery of 15 unidentified bodies from two mass graves in Sirte.

In April, the authority also announced recovery of 11 unidentified bodies from a mass grave in the city, which used to be an Islamic State stronghold before they were expelled from the city in 2016 by the former UN-backed Government of National Accord.

Libya has been suffering political instability and chaos ever since the fall of the late leader Muammar Gaddafi's regime in 2011.
