ABUJA, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- Nigerian police on Thursday said they have launched an investigation and a manhunt for unknown gunmen who attacked a security checkpoint, injuring two policemen in the southern state of Abia.
Geoffrey Ogbonna, a spokesman for the police in Abia, told Xinhua on the phone that the gunmen also went away with the service rifles of the injured policemen following the late Wednesday attack in the Umuahia North local government area of the state.
The gunmen, upon sighting the policemen on duty, opened fire to prevent from being "stopped and searched", said Ogbonna. Then, the attackers fled the scene.
He added that the injured policemen are currently being treated in a police health facility. ■
