LUSAKA, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- The Zambian government said Wednesday it was happy with the progress made during the first-ever electronic Census of Population and Housing exercise.

Minister of Finance and National Planning Situmbeko Musokotwane said preliminary data showed that the exercise, which commenced on Aug. 18 and came to an end Wednesday, has progressed well countrywide with respect to its main objective of universal enumeration.

"I am delighted that this notable performance has been achieved despite reported challenges, in particular during the earlier days of the census," he told reporters during a press briefing.

He also said the government will conduct a mop-up exercise from Sept. 15 to 21 for households that were not fully enumerated.

The census, initially supposed to have been held in August 2020, was postponed to 2021 before being postponed again to August this year.

Zambia conducts a Census of Population and Housing every decade. The last census was conducted in 2010.
