JUBA, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- South Sudan on Monday launched a 6-million-U.S. dollar petroleum engineering and geoscience workstation to support capacity building in the oil sector.

John Akec, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Juba, said the workstation contains some applications for geosciences and petroleum that can be used to simulate oil wells and monitor and interpret the data and also can be used for capacity building of oil workers and university students.

"So this will be useful to students majoring in geology and petroleum engineering and also for capacity building of the staff of oil firms who can come here for training," Akec said in Juba, the capital of South Sudan.

South Sudan announced in May that it has kicked off plans to nationalize the country's oil industry in the next five years.

Puot Kang Chol, Minister of Petroleum, said the production of oil has been affected by floods for the past two years adding that the slump might persist for the next five to seven years.

"The world is changing and if we are to survive then we must adjust accordingly, and if we are to do so then we must have the right people and have the right technology for us to be able to survive," Kang said.

Oil accounting for the bulk of South Sudan's exports and about 60 percent of its gross domestic product, according to the World Bank.
