KAMPALA, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- Four people were feared dead and 1,755 others have been affected by flash floods in the eastern Ugandan district of Bulambuli, a relief agency said here late on Friday.
The Uganda Red Cross Society told reporters that five hours of heavy rains have caused flash floods along the Simu river in Bumasobo, Simu Pondo and Butandiga subcounties.
Buildings were flooded with water, some collapsed, and crops and property were also destroyed in the Friday catastrophe, it said, adding response teams are evacuating people from the flood areas.
Uganda is facing heavy rains, which have caused havoc in the mountainous regions in the eastern and western parts of the country.
The Ugandan government on Thursday issued a flood alert, warning that parts of the country may face floods, mudslides and a possible outbreak of epidemics as the rain intensifies this month up to early next month.
On Tuesday, heavy rains in the western Ugandan district of Kasese triggered landslides that killed 16 people and affected more than 1,100 others. ■
