KAMPALA, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- About 1,190 people were affected by deadly landslides triggered by torrential rains in the western Ugandan district of Kasese on Tuesday, a new report said Wednesday.

The Uganda Red Cross Society said in a rapid assessment report that the displaced people would be taken to temporary housing.

The Tuesday night landslide hit Kasika village, Rukoki Sub-County, leaving 16 people dead and scores injured.

"The search and rescue team continues to work with the local authorities, and the community responders to continue supporting the affected families," the report said.

The report said an emergency meeting would identify landslide-prone areas and start disseminating information for relocation to safer areas.

The western region is facing heavy rains, which have sparked off landslides killing people and destroying houses and crops.
