OUAGADOUGOU, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- At least 35 civilians were killed and 37 others injured on Monday when one vehicle in a convoy hit an improvised explosive device (IED), local authorities said.

The escorted supply convoy leaving for the capital, Ouagadougou, hit the IED between the northern towns of Djibo and Bourzanga, governor of the Sahel region Rodolphe Sorgo said in a statement Monday evening.

"One of the vehicles carrying civilians exploded after hitting an improvised explosive device. The provisional toll is 35 dead and 37 injured, all civilians," the statement said.

Insecurity in Burkina Faso has worsened since 2015, leading to the death of more than 1,000 people and the displacement of over 1.9 million others in the west African nation.
