TUNIS, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- Tunisian security services seized on Thursday a large number of weapons and ammunition in a town in the southern province of Medenine, the National Guard spokesman said.

"The smuggled arms were seized during a security operation conducted (in Ben Guerdane) early Thursday by anti-terrorist units assisted by the Special Unit of National Guard," Houcemeddine Jbabli said in a statement.

"Among the military weapons and ammunition seized are 11 Kalashnikov-type assault rifles, 14 ammunition magazines, and 4,400 7.62-mm bullets," he added.

An investigation revealed that two people were involved in the arms smuggling for terrorist organizations, according to the statement.

Tunisia has witnessed terrorist activities since 2011, with dozens of security and military agents, civilians and foreign tourists having been killed.
