ABUJA, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- Nigerian police have launched an investigation into the abduction of travelers by gunmen who blocked a highway in the country's north region on Wednesday, an official said Thursday.

An unknown number of travelers were taken away from two vehicles by the gunmen who operated on a highway near the Kadobe village in the northern state of Katsina on Wednesday evening, Gambo Isah, a spokesman for the Katsina state police told Xinhua on phone.

"We are working to find out the actual number of those kidnapped during the incident. We are aware that not all the passengers in the two vehicles were kidnapped," Isah said.

The gunmen on dozens of motorbikes rode to a portion of the highway, shooting indiscriminately into the air while ordering vehicles to stop, according to local media reports on Thursday. They then went on to attack two vehicles whose drivers were panicky and veered off the road.

No casualty has been reported so far.

Isah, however, said security operatives had arrived at the scene soon after the incident was reported, chasing away the gunmen.
