LAGOS, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- Nigerian police killed one gunman and recovered a cache of firearms and ammunition during a raid against the camp of a proscribed separatist group in the southern state of Enugu, Enugu police spokesperson Daniel Ndukwe said Tuesday.

Ndukwe said that police operatives engaged gunmen of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) near their camp inside a forest in Enugu State last week, killing one gunman, while several other gunmen escaped with various degrees of gunshot wounds.

The dead body of a police officer who went missing on July 30 was also found in the IPOB camp, the spokesperson said.

Items recovered at the camp included one AR-K2 assault rifle, six pump-action guns, five locally made double-barreled guns, five vehicles, and 20 different brands of motorcycles, Ndukwe said.

The IPOB was classified as a terrorist organization by the Nigerian government in 2017.
