FREETOWN, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese medical team in Sierra Leone said Wednesday they have successfully rescued an 11-year-old Sierra Leonean boy from a deep coma.
Liu Meng, a member of the team, said the boy lost consciousness for four hours and was in a deep coma when he was admitted Friday by the China-Sierra Leone Friendship Hospital where the team is based.
The boy, diagnosed with acute intracranial hypertension, accompanied by cerebral herniation, was immediately taken over by a squad of Chinese doctors.
"The condition of the boy was critical, the vital signs of the boy were sabotaged, and his life was under great risk," Liu told Xinhua.
The squad gave a tailored treatment to the boy with attentive care. After learning the fact that the boy's family could not afford the medical fees, the hospital decided to take no charge.
"After a five-day course, the boy turned into a talkative and smiling figure who can walk and move as usual. We were moved by the innocent smile that flashed again on the face of the boy," Liu said.
The team also handed over a package of medicines and food items and some cash as a token and demonstration of love and sympathy to the boy's family who praised the Chinese medical team and local medical staff for bringing the family's only child back to life.
"We are willing to dedicate our services to saving lives and helping the injured because we believe that great love has no boundaries, which is also the motto of the team," Liu added. ■
