JUBA, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- At least three were killed following a road ambush along South Sudan's Juba-Nimule highway on Tuesday, the police said.

Daniel Justin, National Police Service Spokesperson, said the incident happened at around midday between Obama and Omoya village when a bus traveling from Juba to Nimule was attacked by unidentified armed men.

"It's very unfortunate, one of our buses traveling from Juba to Nimule fell into an ambush and as a result, we lost three people, the driver, assistant driver and one of the passengers died in the incident and then it was just a small bushy place where the attackers just opened fire on the vehicle and ran away," Justin told journalists in Juba, the capital of South Sudan.

He revealed that traffic on the road resumed after security forces were deployed in the area to safeguard passengers and trucks traveling on the road.

The Juba-Nimule highway is the only lifeline that connects South Sudan to the neighboring Uganda and Kenya for the supply of goods to South Sudan's capital.

The armed attack on the road is the first of its kind reported this year.

Last year, four people were killed on the same road following an armed road ambush.
