LAGOS, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- Five people were confirmed killed and two others injured in a road accident in south Nigeria's Cross River state on Tuesday, an official said.

Abdullahi Hassan, a sector commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Cross River, told Xinhua on the phone a truck loaded with cement and a Toyota car collided on a road in the Biase local government area of the state on Tuesday morning.

"Seven people were involved, but five people lost their lives," Hassan said, without giving further details.

The cause of the accident could not be immediately ascertained, and the FRSC has launched an investigation into the incident, he said.

Road accidents are frequently reported in Nigeria, mainly because of poor roads, badly maintained vehicles and reckless driving.
