LAGOS, July 6 (Xinhua) -- Authorities in Lagos, Nigeria's economic hub, said two people died on Wednesday when a boat capsized in the Ikorodu area of the state.

Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, head of the Lagos State Waterways Authority, said in a statement the boat carrying 17 people capsized almost immediately after take-off. Two people died in the accident while 15 others were rescued.

The boat suddenly capsized not more than 200 meters from the terminal and submerged immediately after it departed the Ipakodo ferry terminal in the Ikorodu area of Lagos state, Emmanuel said.

"The water guards and the search and rescue team of the Lagos State Waterways Authority were mobilized to the scene of the incident, leading to the rescue of 15 persons alive," he said.

An investigation into the cause of this mishap is ongoing, he added.
