ABUJA, June 16 (Xinhua) -- At least nine people were killed and 11 others injured when a truck experienced brake failure and crashed into other vehicles late Wednesday on a busy road in Nigeria's northeastern state of Gombe, said the road safety police on Thursday.

The truck, laden with gallons of vegetable oil, crashed into 20 other vehicles, including tricycles and motorcycles, further wreaking havoc around Bomala junction bye-pass in the city of Gombe, the state capital, said Felix Theman, a sector commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Gombe, while briefing reporters in Gombe city.

Theman said that the driver was at high speed at the time of the incident, noting traffic had already built up in the area when the truck's brake failed.

Nine victims died on the spot, he said, adding that the injured sustained various degrees of injury.

The FRSC official cautioned drivers against speeding, especially in built-up areas, adding that the speed limit for such areas must not exceed 40km per hour.

Deadly road accidents are frequently reported in Nigeria, often caused by overloading, bad road conditions, and reckless driving.
