Gunmen abduct 40 travellers in northwest Nigeria

LAGOS, June 13 (Xinhua) -- Nigerian police said on Monday that 40 people were abducted by gunmen suspected to be bandits on a road in the northwest state of Zamfara on Saturday.

Muhammad Shehu, spokesperson for the police in Zamfara, said in a statement that joint security operations are ongoing to identify and rescue the 40 victims who were abducted on an expressway connecting Zamfara and the neighboring state of Sokoto on Saturday evening.

According to reports by local media, the victims were returning to Zamfara from a wedding in the Tambuwal local government area of Sokoto, when they were waylaid by the gunmen who mounted a roadblock on the expressway.

Nigeria, the most populous African country, has been troubled by a series of insecurity cases, including kidnapping, banditry and extremist attacks.
