KAMPALA, June 13 (Xinhua) -- Hundreds of people fleeing fighting in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are crossing into the Ugandan border district of Kisoro, a relief agency said here on Monday.

Irene Nakasiita, a spokesperson of the Uganda Red Cross Society, told reporters that there is an ongoing validation exercise to ascertain the exact number of people, but the estimate is in the hundreds.

Nakasiita said that upon arrival, some refugees do not go to the refugee reception center but remain in host communities.

She said the high number of arrivals is putting a strain on social amenities.

"As more refugees are registered, it means more needs are registered, which calls for more resources to address humanitarian needs," the relief agency said.

In the last few days, there has been intensified fighting between rebels and DRC troops on the DRC side of the border.
