ACCRA, June 7 (Xinhua) -- The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) condemned the attack on a Catholic church in Nigeria last Sunday, which claimed the lives of dozens of worshipers, a statement said Tuesday.
The statement said the subregional body received the news about the gruesome attack with utter shock.
"ECOWAS strongly condemns the dastardly act in all its ramifications and expresses profound sympathies with the government and people of Nigeria and the families of victims of the terrorist act," said the statement.
The statement expressed the subregional bloc's unflinching solidarity with Nigeria, pledging to continue working with all stakeholders to rid the subregion of the evils of terrorism.
A group of armed men carried out an attack on a church at Owo in Nigeria's southwestern Ondo State last Sunday, killing at least 22 worshippers and leaving 50 others injured. ■
