BANJUL, May 25 (Xinhua) -- The Gambia government said on Wednesday it is ready to prosecute its former leader Yahya Jammeh for being linked to more than 240 killings and torture against defenseless citizens and foreign nationals during his rule between July 1994 and January 2017.

The country's attorney general and minister of Justice Dawda Jallow presented the White Paper containing 265 recommendations submitted by the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC) which carried out more than two years of investigations into the atrocities committed by Jammeh or under his watch.

"The government accepted all the recommendations by the TRRC with regards to prosecution, notably the prosecution of ex-President Yahya Jammeh, for a myriad of crimes committed between 1994 and 2017," the minister said at the launch of the White Paper report attended by victims and their families, civil society and foreign missions in the country, including the United Nations.

"There is no doubt that the country has gone through a very traumatic experience and is in dire need of individual and collective healing as well as reconciliation, not just with the perpetrators of these human rights violations but with our past as a nation," the minister said.

The Gambia government says it is working on the prosecution strategy to determine how to try him and dozens of his accomplices.
