KIGALI, May 23 (Xinhua) -- Rockets fired by Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) in its eastern region slammed into northern Rwanda on Monday, injuring several civilians and damaging property, the Rwandan army (RDF) said.

The rockets hit Kinigi and Nyange Sectors in Musanze district that borders DR Congo, the statement said.

"Those injured are receiving treatment and officials are assessing the extent of the damage," Col Ronald Rwivanga, Rwanda's military spokesperson said in the statement.

The RDF has requested urgent investigation by the regional Expanded Joint Verification Mechanism, a regional military framework for a dozen countries of the Great Lakes region, he said.

Rwandan authorities are also engaging the DR Congo counterparts over the incident, Rwivanga said, adding that the situation in the area was back to normal and security assured.

The incident came as an armed conflict, according to reports, erupted in eastern DR Congo's North Kivu Province on Sunday and Monday, when the FARDC and the UN peacekeeping forces (MONUSCO) were reportedly engaged in a fight with the rebel group M23 based in eastern DR Congo, near the border with Rwanda and Uganda.
