DAR ES SALAAM, May 20 (Xinhua) -- The government of Tanzania has Friday pledged to make heavy investments in digital economy, a move aimed at transforming the east African nation's economy, a cabinet minister said on Friday.

Nape Nnauye, the Minister for Information, Communication and Information Technology, told parliament in the capital Dodoma that preparations are under way to spur the digital economy.

Nnauye said the government has set aside 150 million U.S. dollars for the strategy that will see the east African nation's economy going digital.

Nnauye said the strategy will, among others, involve building the technical capacity, skills, institutions, and local digital infrastructure for the government to deliver services to citizens and conduct its own business digitally.

He said the government is currently working on a structure for improving the digital economy, he told the House when he tabled his ministry's budget estimates for the 2022/2023 financial year that runs from July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2023.

"The strategy will involve reviewing the country's policies, laws, rules and regulations," said the minister.
