OUAGADOUGOU, May 16 (Xinhua) -- At least 40 people, including Volunteers for the Defence of the Motherland (army auxiliaries) and civilians, have been killed over the weekend in four armed attacks in Burkina Faso, local security sources said on Monday.

The first attack targeted on Saturday a convoy escorted by army auxiliaries between Salmossi and Markoye in the province of Oudalan (Sahel Region), killing 5 army auxiliaries and a civilian, according to "Sahel Security", a platform of information about the movements of terrorist groups.

A second attack took place in Guessel of the same province and left eight dead among army auxiliaries and twelve dead among civilians, according to local security sources.

The third attack targeted a convoy of civilians escorted by army auxiliaries in Namouyouri in the province of Kompienga (Est Region) on the border with Benin, said another local source, specifying that 17 people were killed and nine others injured.

During the night from Saturday to Sunday, a simultaneous attack targeted the gendarmerie and police stations of Faramana in the province of Houet (Hauts-Bassins Region) near the border with Mali. During the attack, two gendarmes were injured and a vehicle was burned, according to a security source contacted by Xinhua.

Security in Burkina Faso has worsened since 2015 as terrorist attacks have killed more than 1,000 people and displaced more than 1 million others in the West African nation.
