PRAIA, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- The Cape Verde government has announced the cancellation of all carnival-related activities due to the exponential increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in the archipelago.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Internal Affairs, Paulo Rocha, at a press conference on the epidemiological situation in the country on Monday.

According to Paulo Rocha, the decision aims to preserve the response capacity of the national health system.

Carnival groups cannot rehearse or organize parades and presentations of blocks, as well as parties in private or in public spaces, he said.

As of Monday, Cape Verde has reported a total of 50,959 positive cases, and 364 deaths.
