Eight killed in road accident in western Kenya

BUNGOMA, Kenya, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) -- Eight people died on the spot after a minibus, locally known as matatu they were traveling in, rammed into a stationary truck along the Webuye-Eldoret highway on Sunday, the police said.

Western Regional Police Commander Perris Kimani confirmed the 5 a.m. incident, saying the 2NK shuttle matatu was traveling from Bungoma to Nairobi on the Webuye-Eldoret highway when the accident happened.

According to the police, fatal accidents are common in Kenya due to reckless driving, dangerous overtaking, drunk driving, drunk walking, drunk riding, and failure to use helmets.

Some 4,121 people were killed in various accidents as of November 30 in 2021 compared to 3,478 who died in the same period in 2020, according to statistics from the National Transport and Safety Authority. Enditem
