BERLIN, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- Three Chinese women reached the quarterfinals at WTT Champions Frankfurt on Friday, with Chen Yi surviving a five-game contest while Kuai Man and Chen Xingtong advanced in straight games.
Eighth seed Chen Yi was pushed to the limit by Ukraine's Margaryta Pesotska before prevailing 3-2 in the round of 16, giving China three representatives in the quarterfinals.
World No. 5 Kuai Man defeated Germany's Nina Mittelham 3-0, while seventh-ranked Chen Xingtong dispatched Brazil's Bruna Takahashi by the same margin.
Chen Yi had opened her campaign with a straight-games victory over German wildcard Josephina Neumann, while Kuai Man had previously defeated American Amy Wang without dropping a game.
The hosts nevertheless had reason to celebrate in the women's draw as Sabine Winter beat compatriot Han Ying 3-0 to secure a quarterfinal berth. Han had caused a major upset in the previous round by eliminating China's world No. 4 Wang Yidi.
Germany's Annett Kaufmann also bowed out, losing 3-1 to Japan's Hina Hayata. Miwa Harimoto joined compatriot Hayata in the last eight with a 3-1 victory over South Korea's Joo Cheon-hui.
In the men's competition, German wildcard Wim Verdonschot produced a notable result by defeating Brazil's sixth seed Hugo Calderano 3-1 to reach the quarterfinals. Calderano had eliminated China's Liang Jingkun in five games a day earlier, but his campaign ended against Verdonschot.
Another German reached the last eight when Patrick Franziska prevailed 3-2 against compatriot Benedikt Duda. Their five-game meeting ended Duda's run after his opening-round victory over South Korea's Jang Woo-jin.
China's Zhou Qihao, meanwhile, was eliminated by Chinese Taipei's Lin Yun-Ju, who advanced with a 3-1 win.
Japan's Tomokazu Harimoto progressed with a 3-1 victory over South Korea's Lim Jong-hoon, while compatriot Shunsuke Togami overcame another South Korean, Oh Jun-sung, 3-2. ■
