Beginning of Winter, or Lidong, the 19th solar term on the Chinese lunar calendar, falls on Nov. 7 this year, marking the start of the new season.
As temperatures fall, frost silvers the branches in northern China, and farmers across the country remain busy harvesting late crops, tending fields and preparing for the winter ahead.
The changing season also brings a variety of time-honored customs, while inviting people to embrace the traditional wisdom of rest and renewal.
The "24 Solar Terms," inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list, are a traditional Chinese knowledge system and social practice rooted in observations of the sun's annual movement, reflecting the rhythms of seasonal, climatic and phenological changes throughout the year.
