BEIJING, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- Global representatives at a sub-forum of the 7th World Media Summit on Thursday called on media organizations to harness intelligent technologies to deliver accurate, fair, authoritative and trustworthy reporting.
Representatives of media, think tanks, government departments and other institutions, from home and abroad, attended the breakout meeting, where they discussed how media can adapt to changes, embrace opportunities and meet challenges together in the AI era.
Titled Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Chinese Modernization, the event focused on the theme of AI Plus and a new consensus on global communication governance.
Huo Xiaoguang, vice president of Xinhua News Agency, said in his address that, in the face of AI development, traditional mainstream media worldwide are generally undergoing major transformations. To anchor new competitive advantages in the new communication ecosystem, China's mainstream media are carrying out systematic reforms.
Xinhua News Agency is willing to work with all parties to jointly safeguard media credibility, promote the inclusive sharing of technological achievements, and enhance mutual understanding and friendship among different civilizations, he added.
Bayo Onanuga, Nigerian president's special adviser on information and strategy and spokesman for the president, said that we can no longer ignore the profound impact of AI, much of which is positive. Unless we are willing to return to the Stone Age, we must face this trend and take it seriously.
Participants called on media colleagues to build consensus, promote dialogue among civilizations through openness and inclusiveness, and enable intelligent technologies to help make media reporting more accurate, fair, authoritative and trustworthy.
The world's first bionic humanoid robot news anchor made its official debut at the event. The sub-forum also held a signing ceremony for the Xinhua News Agency AI Industry Alliance (Beijing Base) and a launch ceremony for a research project on mobile news image technology and authenticity standards.
Held from Nov. 5 to 9 in Beijing, the 7th World Media Summit is co-hosted by Xinhua News Agency and the People's Government of Beijing Municipality. It brings together nearly 500 delegates from nearly 330 mainstream media outlets, think tanks, government departments and international organizations from 112 countries and regions around the world. ■
