ASUNCION, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- Paraguay's Senate on Friday rejected President Santiago Pena's request to postpone his impeachment trial over a banking scandal, local media reported.
The Senate voted 39 to 3 against the proposed 72-hour delay, with two abstentions, according to local newspaper ABC Color.
Pena sought additional time to prepare his defense, arguing that he had received the impeachment charges late Thursday night.
The president faces impeachment proceedings over the collapse of Ueno Bank that left millions of customers unable to access their accounts. Pena announced his resignation Thursday amid mounting pressure over the banking crisis. ■
