BUJUMBURA, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- Burundian President Evariste Ndayishimiye on Wednesday signed a decree calling voters to participate in the presidential election scheduled for May 3, 2027.
According to the decree, candidates are appealed to file their applications with the Independent National Electoral Commission from Nov. 13 to 22.
It indicated that if none of the candidates has been able to obtain 50 percent of the votes in the first round, a second round will take place on June 1, 2027.
Six political parties, including the ruling party, the National Council for the Defense of Democracy-Forces for the Defense of Democracy (CNDD-FDD) which nominated incumbent President Evariste Ndayishimiye, have already nominated their candidates for the 2027 presidential election.
According to Burundi's 2018 Constitution, the president serves a seven-year term and may serve no more than two consecutive terms.
From Oct. 26 to 28, a partial voter registration happened countrywide, targeting those who did not register for the 2025 elections.
In 2025, Burundi held legislative, senatorial, district and village elections, during which the ruling CNDD-FDD party secured a landslide victory. ■
