WASHINGTON, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- Many Republican lawmakers alarmed by Tuesday's election losses are moving swiftly to pin the blame on Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and the House could vote as soon as next week to impeach him, CNN reported Wednesday.

These Republican lawmakers argued behind the scenes that Hegseth played a leading role in convincing President Donald Trump to attack Iran "with no exit strategy," and "no plan for managing the inevitable political fallout," the report said.

Democrats are projected to flip control of the House of Representatives and the Senate, election forecasting agency Decision Desk HQ reported late Tuesday. Several media outlets have described the outcome as a "blue wave" or even a "blue tsunami."

According to NBC News' latest projections, Democrats are expected to win at least 54 Senate seats, a net gain of seven from their pre-election total. They flipped several key battleground states, including Texas, Kansas, Iowa, Ohio and Maine.

NBC News also projected that Democrats would win at least 242 House seats, a gain of 34, with the total expected to rise as vote counting continues.

Trump told The Wall Street Journal on Tuesday night that the war in Iran was partially to blame for widespread Republican losses in the midterm elections. Trump, however, maintained that he didn't regret launching the war earlier this year.

"Iran was a piece of it," he said in a phone interview with The Wall Street Journal when asked whether the war had contributed to Republicans' poor performance in the election.

Vice President JD Vance said on social media Wednesday that "the reason we lost is the war. The president himself said so last night." ■
