SYDNEY, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- Two people died after the car they were traveling in collided with two trucks in the eastern Australian state of New South Wales (NSW) on Tuesday night.

Police said on Wednesday that emergency services were called to a highway 320 km northwest of Sydney around 10 p.m. on Tuesday and found that a northbound sedan had collided with a southbound heavy freight truck.

The sedan was subsequently struck by a second heavy freight truck.

A man and woman who were traveling in the car died at the scene.

The drivers of both trucks were not injured, but were taken to hospital for mandatory drugs and alcohol testing.

The police force in NSW on Wednesday issued a statement urging motorists to slow down and take care following a spike in road deaths.

It said that nine people were killed in eight crashes across the state in the week to Monday, followed by another three deaths in two separate crashes on Tuesday.

According to the latest data, as of Monday, there had been 289 road deaths in NSW so far in 2026, up from 282 at the same point in 2025. ■
