SYDNEY, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- Australian authorities said on Wednesday that they have charged Mexican and Vietnamese nationals over separate alleged attempts to import commercial quantities of methamphetamine.
The Australian Federal Police (AFP) said that the Mexican national, a 43-year-old man, was arrested following an investigation into 50 kg of methamphetamine that was found by border officials within 20 metal cylinders that arrived in Australia from Mexico's Tijuana in August.
The man was arrested after he accepted a controlled delivery of the shipment at a property in southwest Sydney in September and was charged with importing a commercial quantity of methamphetamine.
A separate joint statement from the AFP, Australian Border Force and police force in the state of New South Wales on Wednesday said that a 47-year-old Vietnamese woman was arrested over an alleged methamphetamine import concealed in coconut water.
Authorities said that an investigation began in December 2025 when Border Force officers detected liquid methamphetamine mixed with a shipment of 800 liters of coconut water.
The Vietnamese woman, who police allege was responsible for funding and coordinating the importation attempt, was arrested in northwest Sydney in September and was also charged with importing a commercial quantity of methamphetamine.
If convicted, both the man and the woman face maximum sentences of life imprisonment. ■
