SYDNEY, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- Prince Ampem scored once and played a key role in two other goals as reigning Chinese Super League champion Shanghai Port beat Australia's Newcastle Jets 4-2 away in the 2026-27 AFC Champions League Elite league stage on Tuesday.
Shanghai Port raced into a 3-0 lead before surviving a second-half fightback from the hosts, with substitute Li Xinxiang sealing victory in the closing stages.
Leonardo opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, heading home from close range after Ampem delivered a cross from the wing.
The visitors doubled their lead just three minutes later when Oscar Melendo sent a ball across the face of goal toward Ampem, only for Newcastle defender Thomas Aquilina to turn it into his own net.
Ampem made it 3-0 in the 51st minute, latching onto Leonardo's through ball before firing into the bottom right corner to score for the fourth consecutive Champions League Elite match.
Newcastle pulled a goal back in the 58th minute and struck again in the 80th to reduce the deficit to 3-2, threatening an unlikely comeback in wet conditions at Newcastle Stadium.
However, Li restored Shanghai Port's two-goal cushion in the 86th minute to secure the visitors' second victory of the league stage.
The result lifted Shanghai Port to seven points from four matches, with two wins, one draw and one defeat. Newcastle remained without a point after suffering a fourth consecutive loss.
Shanghai Port next hosts Thailand's Buriram United on Nov. 24, when Newcastle welcomes Japan's Kashiwa Reysol. ■
