BUENOS AIRES, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- Guido Mainero and Victor Cuesta scored second-half goals as Platense beat Central Cordoba 2-0 in Argentina's Clausura tournament on Monday.
The hosts broke the deadlock just before the hour when Mainero took a touch to control Nicolas Retamar's pass before rifling a shot past goalkeeper Alan Aguerre.
Cuesta doubled the advantage 16 minutes from time with a looping header after Bautista Merlini's chipped pass from the edge of the 18-yard box.
The visitors controlled just 38 percent of possession and had two shots on target, slipping to their ninth loss of the campaign.
Platense is now 11th in the 15-team Zone A standings with 17 points, seven ahead of last-placed Central Cordoba.
With one match remaining in the regular season, Platense needs an unlikely combination of results to reach the quarterfinals.
"We've gone through a lot of ups and downs this season and the truth is that the wins have come too late," Mainero told reporters after the match.
Elsewhere in Argentina's top flight on Monday, Argentinos Juniors won 2-1 at Atletico Tucuman, Independiente Rivadavia cruised to a 3-1 home win over Banfield and Independiente drew 1-1 at Defensa y Justicia. ■
