MADRID, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel has died at the age of 30 after suffering a serious injury in a collision with a goalkeeper during a Spanish second-division match, his club announced Tuesday.

De Miguel collided with Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono in the sixth minute of stoppage time during Monday's match as the two players chased a loose ball outside the penalty area.

The striker was knocked unconscious, prompting players from both teams to urgently call for medical assistance. After receiving treatment on the pitch, he was taken by ambulance to a hospital, and the match was abandoned.

"We are broken with pain, with a knot in our throats, and unable to believe that it is true," Tenerife said in a statement announcing De Miguel's death at 8 a.m. Tuesday.

"There are no words of consolation; there is nothing that can mitigate this total feeling of sadness. Our thoughts are with his family, his loved ones, and everyone in Tenerife who today is crying for this cruel end," the club added.

According to media reports, De Miguel suffered cardiac arrest while being transported to the hospital but was resuscitated by emergency personnel.

He was subsequently admitted to the intensive care unit at Hospital Universitario Nuestra Senora de Candelaria in Tenerife.

The club reported at around 5 a.m. Tuesday that De Miguel's neurological condition had deteriorated. He died approximately three hours later. ■
