GUANGZHOU, Nov. 1 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese research institute on Sunday released an outlook report on disruptive technology, selecting 40 technologies with significant recent breakthroughs.
At the opening ceremony of the Greater Bay Area Science Forum 2026 in Guangzhou, south China's Guangdong Province, the Institute of Scientific and Technical Information of China (ISTIC) issued the Disruptive Technology Outlook 2026.
These 40 technologies span five major fields: artificial intelligence, next-generation information technology, life and health, new energy, new materials and advanced manufacturing. All of them have shown significant recent breakthroughs and the potential to nurture future disruptive innovations.
For example, the application boundaries of mRNA therapeutics are steadily expanding, with the potential to provide general strategies for preventing and treating multiple diseases. Ultrafast-charging technology for power batteries can also improve charging efficiency and infrastructure utilization.
As these technologies evolve and application scenarios expand, they continue to foster new industries, new models and new drivers of growth.
The selection considered factors such as the degree of recent technological breakthroughs, technological criticality, and industrial impact.
Since 2022, the ISTIC has released its annual disruptive technology outlook report. The related research findings have served the innovative development of cutting-edge and disruptive technologies and the forward-looking planning of future industries. ■
